In Loving Memory of Levina “Sonja” Susanna Greeff

1950 – 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sonja, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, on 1/21/2025 at 4:30am at the age of 74. After a battle with stage 4 cancer, she passed away peacefully under the care of her younger sister; her daughter-in-law; her two sons; and her grandchildren at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House, where she received exceptional and compassionate care in her final days.

Born and raised in South Africa, Sonja built a life of love and devotion with her husband, Matthys “Thys” Greeff which have been soulmates since they got married in 1970. In 2015, they made the life-changing decision to move to America to be near their two sons, Charl and Jacques, and their growing families. She cherished every moment spent with her five beloved grandchildren. 

Sonja was a woman of simple joys and deep connections. She found happiness in the little things: a quiet moment with a good book, the smell of a fresh garden, or the company of her five adoring grandchildren, Gabriela, Matthew, Michaela, Joshua, and Benjamin. Her thoughtfulness, generosity, and tireless work ethic were an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Sonja found joy in life’s simple treasures, especially the company of her loved ones. Her home was always open to everyone and place of warmth, comfort, and unconditional love. Her devotion to her family was unwavering, and her strength and grace were an inspiration to all.

A loyal and dedicated Christian, Sonja fellowshipped at Bible Tabernacle (Rutherfordton, NC), where her faith remained a source of strength and solace throughout her life. Her commitment to her church and her unshakable belief in God were at the heart of her character.

She leaves behind her loving husband, Matthys “Thys” Greeff; her sons, Charl Greeff and Jacques Greeff; her older brother, Johan Du Plessis; her younger sister, Tilly van Enter; her daughter-in-law’s, Nolandi Greeff and Michele Greeff; her five grandchildren; and many other friends and family members who will forever hold her in their hearts. 

Sonja will be remembered for her kindness, resilience, and faith, as well as the legacy of love and forgiveness she leaves behind. She will be greatly missed until we will join her in our Heavenly home. 

A graveside service will be held at 1pm on Friday, January the 24th, 2025 at Good Sheperd Memorial Park in Boiling Springs, South Carolina.
