Mr. John Hunter Hammett, age 89 of Fairforest, passed away on December 30 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home following a brief illness.
He was born on June 14, 1928 in Cannons Campground to the late Charlie Lloyd Hammett and Ruth Garrett Hammett. He was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and served in the US Army from 1948-1951. He worked at Draper Cooperation, the Coca Cola company and retired from Metro Water Works. He was a long time faithful member of Fairforest Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Sunday School secretary, Greeter and Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Young at Heart Club and the Yesterday’s Children Senior Choir and faithfully visited the sick. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and watching his Purple Martins.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Julia Charles Hammett; sons, Dean Hammett (Renee) and Jay Hammett (Brenda) and daughter, Pattie Blackwell (Terry); grandchildren, Brooke Confer (Chet), Allyson Davis (Brett), Ashley Wyatt (Jeremy), Ericka Hammett, Jared Hammett and Jed Blackwell (Bonnie); as well as eight great grandchildren. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings Gladys Hammett Phillips, Charles Dupre Hammett and Dot Hammett Wilkins.
Visitation will be from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2018 followed by a Celebration of Life service at Fairforest Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. Jimmy Hilton and Rev. Joe Dempsey.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Fairforest Baptist Church 115 Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29301 or SRHS Hospice Home 686 Jeff Davis Drive Spartanburg, SC 29303.
The family will be at the home.
